What is Netra Tarpana?

Netra Tarpana (also known as Akshi Tarpana, Netra Basti or Netra Tarpan) is the most renowned and classical Ayurvedic eye therapy. The Sanskrit word "Netra" means eyes, and "Tarpana" means to nourish or satisfy. True to its name, this therapy provides deep, direct nourishment to the eyes.

In this procedure, a retaining wall of black gram (urad dal) dough is carefully constructed around each eye socket, creating a sealed pool. Warm medicated ghee — prepared by infusing pure cow's ghee with specific eye-health herbs like Triphala, Saptamrita Loha, Yashti Madhu, and other classical formulations — is slowly poured into this pool to fill it. The patient is asked to open their eyes and blink periodically while the medicated ghee bathes the eye directly.

How Netra Tarpana is Performed at Sanyom Ayurveda

  • Preparation: The patient lies comfortably on a treatment table. Dough rings are moulded and placed around each eye to form leak-proof wells.
  • Ghee preparation: Our physician selects the appropriate medicated ghee formulation based on your specific eye condition and Dosha assessment.
  • Administration: Warm medicated ghee is slowly poured into the dough wells, completely immersing the eyes. The patient is guided to open their eyes and slowly blink.
  • Duration: The ghee is retained for 15–20 minutes depending on the condition and the physician's assessment.
  • Post-procedure: The ghee is drained, the dough removed, and the eyes are gently cleaned. A brief eye massage and application of cooling herbs may follow.
